Drawing on its rich history of establishing frameworks in which boards of directors are able to function at a high level, AMC has developed Governance Essentials, a half-day workshop that provides  core governance practices with a focus on the "nuts and bolts" of good governance.

Meet the Experts

Mark Engle

Mark Engle, DM CAE FASAE
Mark Engle is a principal of AMC who specializes in board governance and strategy and inspired the vision of the Governance Essentials course. A frequent author and speaker on governance, board development, and high performing organizations, Mark regularly develops new research that leads to advancement in the nonprofit management profession. Each year, he works closely with dozens of nonprofit organizations on a variety of governance issues, from single board development presentations to more detailed board and committee restructuring projects.

A faculty member of ASAE’s Exceptional Boards program, Mark serves on six boards of directors and has participated in more than 300 board meeting during his career.

Mark is a Fellow of the American Society of Association Executives and the Mandel Center for Nonprofit Leadership (Case Western Reserve University) and is a BoardSource Certified Governance Trainer. He received his Doctor of Management degree from Case Western Reserve University in nonprofit governance.

Erin Volland

Erin Volland, MPA CAE
Erin Volland is a senior consultant focused primarily on AMC’s governance work. Having spent her career working in associations, she has held several key roles at two individual healthcare membership associations: the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA).

Most recently Erin led the membership engagement team and strategy for the AAOS, a new position and endeavor for the Academy which included developing a fellow designation, engagement score, digital badging and supporting more than $20 million in dues revenue. Erin has also worked in component relations, volunteer management, program management, and governance.

Erin has served as a volunteer on the Association Forum CAE Working Group, a facilitator for the Association Forum’s Certified Association Executive (CAE) Study Class, and as a member of the American Society of Association Executive’s Component Relations Council.

Erin has a master’s degree in public affairs in nonprofit management and policy analysis from the O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs at Indiana University and was a recipient of the Association Forum and USAE Forty Under 40 Award in 2014.
