Steve R. Smith, MS CAE

Steve R. Smith, MS CAE, serves as CEO and executive director of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM), the professional organization for physicians who specialize in the care of people living with serious illness, the dying, and their families.

Smith joined AMC in 2007 with a wealth of experience in the management of healthcare associations, most recently at the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, where he served as senior director of business development, marketing, and membership services. He also worked for 8 years at the national office of the Alzheimer's Association in Chicago.

His keen business sense, strong communication skills, and thorough knowledge of the ever-changing and expanding healthcare environment have allowed his association clients to expand their services through strategic planning and innovative programming. Smith earned BS and MS degrees from Illinois State University in Normal, IL, concentrating in business communications and aging studies. He is an active member of Association Forum of Chicagoland and has been a Certified Association Executive (CAE) since 2003.
